Yes, I said it. The Church has failed us. The Church, collectively, has failed women, men, and children. Why? Because they have failed to preach the Truth of abortion in the Pulpit.
For some reason, the Pro Life community has been blinded by the politics of the issue and rather than see it for what it is, a game of flip floppers in all political parties, we have been star struck by our presence in the political arena. I am NOT saying that the Pro Life community should not have leaders trying to change laws to protect women and children. Every little inch counts. But where, oh where, are the Pro Lifers in the Churches? Why do we not hear about the horror of abortion, the damage it causes to men, women, children, and families? Instead Pastors and Priests are inundated with broken families, families in distress - congregants and parishioners suffering from substance abuse, porn addictions, eating disorders, financial issues, adultery, abusive relationships, and more. These are all a form of self abuse and a direct result of abortion. So, how many of those broken homes contain a person who has been injured and wounded by an abortion in his or her past?
Statistically, 1 in 3 U.S. women will have at least one abortion by the age of 45*. That’s 30% of American women. Let that sink in. Statistically, 1 in 5 women who abort identify as Born Again, Evangelical, Charismatic, or Fundamentalist Christian*. Also, 37% of women who abort identify as Protestant, while 28% identify as Catholic*.
Considering that more than one million women have an abortion each year in the U.S., this means 200,000 Bible Believers are among them. And if you ask just about any Christian ministry working with these women, they will reveal that a vast majority will never, ever reveal their secret.
Here’s a link to the full article with an interview of a post-abortive Mother who identifies as Christian. She talks about how her silence, shame and guilt damaged her relationship further with God, her Church and her own family: "The Secret Shame of Abortion in the Church”: http://www.christianitytoday.com/women/2015/february/secret-shame-of-abortion-in-church.html
So what is the Church doing, or not doing, that is contributing to the horror of abortion?
Our Churches are our community. They are our beacons of Light. They are Jesus to the world. When a woman or man doesn’t feel worthy of Jesus, they should, at the very least, feel comfortable enough to seek shelter among their Church community. This is my focus; my mission now. I recently accepted the volunteer position of Regional Coordinator for Silent No More Awareness Campaign (www.SilentNoMore.org) in the Cincinnati area. Here, I will begin, one Church at a time. I covet your prayers.
